Which strategies can guide the sustainable regeneration of Italian port areas? Lattanzio KIBS addressed this question at LetExpo during the panel “Ports, Dry Ports and Cities”, where it also presented the HUB Green Ports initiative

A Green Award

Today, port areas represent a strategic hub for economic and territorial development at both the national and European levels. This was the central theme of the panel “Ports, Dry Ports and Cities: Strategies for Sustainable Regeneration,” organized within the ALIS HUB during LetExpo, held in Verona from 10 to 13 March 2026.

The panel brought together representatives from institutions, the business community and the research sector to discuss the challenges related to logistics, infrastructure innovation and sustainability. Lattanzio KIBS contributed with scenario data from its Research Center, presenting the HUB Green Ports multi-stakeholder platform for sustainable port development. On this occasion, the initiative received the prestigious LetExpo 2026 Award, recognizing its contribution to sustainability in the logistics and transport sector.

Through HUB Green Ports, the goal is to strengthen integration between ports and cities by enhancing environmental and territorial resources and promoting innovative solutions for infrastructure redevelopment and the development of new sustainable port models.

Port Area Regeneration at the core of european strategies

“Regenerating a city means activating an integrated development process that transforms marginal areas into engines of economic growth […] it means restoring economic, social and environmental value to territories and the communities that inhabit them.”

In her speech, Annachiara Annino, Partner at Lattanzio KIBS, highlighted regeneration as a strategic lever to strengthen competitiveness, sustainability and integration between ports and cities. From this perspective, the transformation of port areas goes beyond infrastructure, becoming a driver capable of generating economic, employment and territorial development impacts.

The presentation also illustrated the results of a research study conducted by the Lattanzio KIBS Research Center on a sample of 1,000 citizens in 10 Italian port cities. The study analyzes the perceptions and expectations of local communities regarding the blue economy and the future of port areas, revealing a growing demand for infrastructure redevelopment, the recovery of abandoned areas and stronger integration between ports and their urban contexts.
